Celebrating Advent

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness –
on them light has shined.
– Isaiah 9:2

The Advent Season includes the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. After that, the new Christian year begins by celebrating “the twelve days of Christmas,” which end on January 6, also known as Epiphany. The Adven season is meant as a time of hopeful expectation as we await the coming of the Messiah (for his second coming) and celebrate his birth (his first coming).

At FBC Westwego, this year we are excited to be holding our own observance of the lighting of Advent candles. We lit one candle the first Sunday of Advent and then each subsequent Sunday we light one additional candle. There is also a corresponding reading form the prophet Isaiah as well as a focus on one particular aspect of the birth of Christ each week.

Please join us as we celebrate the birth of our Savior while also looking forward in hopeful anticipation of his eventual return!
